what is capoeira?

Capoeira is a martial art form that combines elements of self defense with community oriented philosophy, ritual, musical instruments, song, dance and gymnastics.  There is speculation about its exact date of origin, however it is certain that it began amongst enslaved Africans in Brazil brought from Africa to South America during the 15th century Portuguese slave trade.  By design Capoeira resembles a dance, as two persons exchange synchronized movements in an enclosed circle called a roda.  The Africans camouflaged Capoeira as a dance to convince their European slave masters that they were not training a martial art.  Capoeira builds upon its rich history to build global communities, while providing students mental and physical benefits.
